Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch and 10-inch tablets are very mid-range

Samsung’s first two Galaxy Tab 3 models have been officially announced. Both an 8-inch and a 10.1-inch tablet will be launching globally next month, and you won’t find a quad-core chip or 1080p display in either one.
No, the new Galaxy Tab models have shifted towards the mid-range as their Note cousins take over the top end of Samsung’s line-up. Both tablets will feature a relatively modest 1280 x 800 display, which translates to 189ppi on the 8-incher and 149ppi on the 10.1.
As for that rumored Atom processor, it’s apparently going to power the larger model. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will run a dual-core Intel chip clocked at 1.6GHz, and the fact that Samsung has opted for 1GB of RAM confirms that this tablet isn’t meant to blow away power users with its raw power. Speaking of power, the 6800mAh battery should provide plenty of run-time.
The smaller Tab dials back to 1.5GHz, and it’s a dual core chip. Whether it’s ARM or x86 remains a mystery for now. It has also got 1GB of RAM, and Samsung  has fitted it with a 4450mAh battery — roughly ten per cent better than its 7-inch predecessor.
Samsung will offer the usual variants — both Wi-Fi and 3/4G enabled — with 16 or 32GB of internal storage. Both support microSD expansion, of course. They’ll also ship with Android 4.2 out of the box and the requisite Samsung bloat value-added software like ChatOn, S Voice, and S Travel.
It’s pretty clear from these new releases that the Galaxy Tab is no longer offered as a direct competitor to the iPad. The Galaxy brand is successful enough that Samsung can justify creating two tiers for prospective shoppers to choose from: the mid-range Tab and the high-end Note.
Ultimately, the Galaxy Tab 3 will probably be hot sellers — assuming Samsung prices them smartly.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Honors Maryhurst Children's Home with Hope For Children Channel Award

Kentucky Child Welfare Agency to Receive $10,000 worth of Samsung Technology Thanks to SLYN Systems & Peripherals

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., March 12, 2012 – Samsung Electronics America Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, today announced that Maryhurst, a children’s home and foster care agency in Louisville, Kentucky, as the latest winner of the Samsung’s Hope for Children Channel Award. They will receive $10,000 worth of technology from Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division. SLYN Systems & Peripherals (SS&P), Louisville's longest running personal computer dealer and service center, nominated them for the award.

For almost 170 years, Maryhurst has cared for children and families in greatest need. Founded by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1843, Maryhurst is the oldest operating child welfare agency in Kentucky. The Sisters provided a caring environment for girls who suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as homelessness. Recognized as one of the few agencies in the country capable of caring for teenage girls who are among the most traumatized victims, Maryhurst helps those who have nowhere else to turn for healing and hope and is commited to providing them with permanent homes. In December 2011, Maryhurst was featured for the second time in five years by ABC News with Diane Sawyer as a model for best practices in foster care.

“We provide daily care for nearly 200 children and teens through our residential treatment program for teenage girls, group home settings for teen girls, therapeutic foster care and transitional living services,“ said Julie Roberts, Maryhurst’s vice president of development and communications. “We need to raise at least $2 million every year just to keep our doors open, so much needed technology upgrades tend to get pushed down the list. Samsung’s Hope for Children award will allow us to purchase the technology we so desperately need to better connect our foster care program with our network of volunteers and we would like to thank both Samsung and Jeff at SS&P for coming together to make this possible.”

“I’m truly happy that as a local small business owner we are able to help out in some small way,” said Jeff Slyn, owner of SLYN Systems & Peripherals. “Maryhurst is a wonderful program that I have been volunteering at for years and I can’t tell you how great it felt to see them win this award. Samsung is an amazing organization that I have had a terrific relationship with as a reseller and this award is really just icing on the cake.”

Samsung’s Hope for Children Channel Award is part of Samsung’s Partners in Innovation channel program announced in 2011. It invites Samsung resale partners to nominate worthy local education institutions through the program’s online portal, Partner Central. Selections are then made by an executive panel and the donation is made on behalf of the selected partner.

“Samsung’s whole Partners in Innovation program is built off a platform that helps us learn more about the the needs of our partners and the communities they serve. Providing this Hope for Children Channel Award to such a deserving program closely integrated with one of our partners is a great example of that,” said Richard Hutton, director of channel marketing for Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division. “We look forward to working with Julie and the folks at Maryhurst to determine what Samsung technology is going to help improve their daily lives the most.”

The Hope for Children channel awards are part of Samsung’s larger Hope for Children program which was developed with a strategic focus on programs dedicated to helping children share the wonder of life, learning and the planet. Since 2002 Samsung and its retail and business partners have raised more than $30 million for more than 400 schools, community-based foundations and charities throughout the U.S.

Ridgefield Park, NJ, and Ashburn, VA – Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Intelligent Decisions (ID), Inc., a recognized leader in federal IT solutions, announced today that the Samsung Series 7 Slate has been awarded the network slate tablet category contract under the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Client Computing and Servers blanket purchase agreement (BPA). ID and Samsung are partnering to deliver the Samsung Series 7 Slate, which is the first device selected under the new network tablet category, available for deployment at USAF bases worldwide. The USAF has added the Samsung Series 7 Slate to the BPA effective immediately.

The Samsung Series 7 Slate provides the USAF standard desktop configuration implementation of Windows® 7 Professional and supports all the same programs as a full-size PC, in a slim, light tablet form-factor. At just a half-inch thick and featuring a responsive 11.6-inch touch screen, the Series 7 Slate allows for convenient use on the move but can also be docked or connected to an optional Bluetooth® keyboard so no PC functionality is sacrificed. The Samsung Slate is delivered with a Trusted Computing Group certified, Trusted Platform Module 1.2 chip. With no rewriting or retraining necessary for IT departments, this tablet solution has established a reputation for conquering security, acquisitions and functionality hurdles.

“The Samsung Series 7 Slate combines high-end design and graphics with the strength and capabilities of a full-size PC,” said ID President and CEO Harry Martin. “Productivity will never be easier for all levels of U.S. Air Force employees who want the convenience of a tablet without having to compromise when it comes to programs, power and capabilities.”

“Highly mobile government agencies such as the U.S. Air Force are increasingly looking for mobile PC alternatives that can meet their stringent purchasing requirements and give their personnel the computing power they need for maximum productivity anywhere they go,” said Todd Bouman, vice president of marketing at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division. “Samsung engineered the Series 7 Slate with the needs of government in mind, from meeting strict security and network compatibility requirements to durability, quality and TAA-compliance.”

With a powerful Intel® Core™ i5 processor and 4GB1 of DDR3 system memory, the Series 7 Slate meets the Air Force’s Gold Master standards for computing performance. The Samsung Series 7 Slate is fully compliant with the Trade Agreements Act (TAA), a requirement for government agencies and educational institutions purchasing products with government funds. For agencies such as the Air Force with strict security requirements, the basic input/output system (BIOS) of the Series 7 Slate is NIST SP800-147-compliant and fully supports secure BIOS integrity measurement mechanisms.

The Quantum Enterprise Buy, or QEB, catalog of systems is available through AFWAY, a Web-based Air Force system for purchasing IT that provides a one-stop resource where USAF customers can quickly learn about an array of products and services.
