Sony claims that both the new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models of its Haswell-equipped Vaio Pro ultrabooks are the world’s lightest. The 11.6-inch model weighs in at 1.9lb (0.87k , where as the 13.3-incher is a little heavier at just 2.33lb (1.06kg). The weight savings have been achieved by forming the case out of uni-directional carbon fibre, but Sony hasn’t skimped on the internals.
Both ultrabooks can be configured with up to an Intel Core i7-4500U processor that includes HD Graphics 4400. The rest of the components are split depending on whether you opt for the 11.6- or 13.3-inch models. The memory on offer is 4GB or 8GB, SSD storage is up to 256GB or 512GB respectively, and both displays are 1920×1080. The displays are also touchscreen as standard and use Bravia Triluminos for a “richer, more natural viewing experience.” Sony has also included X-Reality, which apparently optimizes video playback quality.
Other features of note include a backlit keyboard, USB 3.0 and USB charging for your gadgets, an SD memory card slot, and HDMI-out. As you’d expect, both Ultrabooks run Windows 8. But it’s the potential for battery life that will grab the attention of anyone who works away from a power outlet all day.
The 11.6-inch Vaio Pro offers 11 hours of battery life as standard, while the 13.3-inch achieves 8 hours. However, Sony is also offering a sheet battery you can connect to the base of the ultrabooks. On the 13.3-inch Pro that increases battery life to 18 hours, but on the 11.6-inch you get a true day-long amount of juice with 25 hours of battery life claimed. Sure, that extra battery is going to add some weight to your bag, but you’re starting out with the world’s lightest ultrabook and are guaranteeing an entire day of power in return.
Pricing is expected to start at $1150 for the smaller Pro and $1250 for the 13-inch model. They should be available to buy later this month.
